The Five Boats
One of the lesser-known rules of composition is the Rule of Odds. It means that as humans, our natural aesthetics enjoys odd numbers of similar objects in the frame. Did you ever notice that you prefer to look at an odd number of sticks or poles in a picture? Or a group of five dogs instead of four? Some would say it's unnatural, but usually an odd number is comforting to the eye and makes the picture easy to look at. The five boats in the little town of Puerto Libertad in Sonora, Mexico, were being tended to and prepared for the next fishing day. The gentle sliver of smoke filled the sky and gave the frame the final touch for making it complete.
